Written with wisdom, sensitivity and extraordinary spiritual insight, Impeachment of Man is a thought-provoking indictment of the values and mores of today’s “produce and consume” society. This book is simultaneously an eloquent appeal for thoughtful stewardship of the environment and for compassionate treatment of animals.

Stressing the value and worth of all living beings, she writes with intelligence and verve against cruelty to animals, deforestation, soil erosion, overpopulation, and planetary degradation. In this book, first published in 1959, the author makes an eloquent plea for a new social order based instead on eternal, life-affirming truths.

Savitri Devi’s fervent protest against cruelty to animals and heartfelt plea for a vegetarian lifestyle is based on her conviction that divinity manifests itself in every living thing, and indeed in all of nature. In her view, human beings do not stand above animals, but are rather a part of the ecosystem. Humans, therefore, should respect all life, and the whole of nature.

From childhood and throughout her life, the author was a passionate advocate for animal rights. She was a pioneer activist for animal welfare and ecological preservation. She held that vivisection, circuses, slaughter of animals, and the fur industry did not belong in a healthy, civilized society. Support for animal rights and welfare, she makes clear, is by no means merely a modern or “liberal” cause.

Savitri Devi (1905-1982) was the pen name of one of the most original and influential National Socialist thinkers and writers of the post-World War II era. She was born Maximine Julia Portaz in France, where she also grew up and was educated. She was of English, Greek and Italian ancestry. At the University of Lyon she earned Master’s degrees in philosophy and chemistry, and a Ph.D. in philosophy. She lived and worked in India during most of her adult life.

She is sometimes regarded as the “high priestess” of Hitlerian Aryanism. Her views on animal rights welfare and the ecology were in keeping with her Hindu-Hitlerian outlook. Probably her most widely-read work is The Lightning and the Sun. Today her writings are far more influential and widely appreciated than they were during her lifetime.
