Archibald Maule Ramsay was educated at Eton and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. During the First World War he served with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards, until he was severely wounded in 1916. Thereafter, and until the end of the war, he served at Regimental H.Q., and the War Office, and the British War Mission in Paris. From 1920 Captain Ramsay was a Member of His Majesty’s Scottish Body Guard.

In 1931 he was elected a Member of Parliament. On May 23, 1940, he was arrested under Regulation 18b, an extraordinary measure used by the British government to hold politically undesirable persons – in this case because Ramsay was a patriot who opposed the Anglo-German war. For two and a half years he was detained, without formal charge or trial, in a cell in Brixton Prison. He was released on September 26, 1944, and the next morning he resumed his seat in the House of Commons, which he held until the end of that Parliament in 1945.
